Be Restarting Your Health Journey – vroom vroom

I can count on my left hand those that know that in 2019, before Steve’s mom died, that I was training for an Ironman triathlon. My goal was to swim almost 4 kilometres (2.5 miles), bike 180 kilometres (112 miles) and finish it all off with a Run/walk a marathon (42 kms and 26 miles.). I gave up on that dream when she died and we spent every few weekends in Vancouver for a few months.

I can count on no hands nor fingers those that know the depth of my physical and mental health struggles the last three years. Here’s the honest truth on what the big picture looked like for me:

🔆 Two summers of not wanting to get out of bed even when the sun streamed in my window.

💪🏻 Two plus years of sheer willpower and “push” to get off my butt to exercise, which has been a first for me in my entire life.

🧥700 days of hiding under extra-large clothing, even in 30 degree Celsius weather.

🙈 700 days of hiding, to be honest. Not wanting to see people, run into people I know or even reach out to friends.

🙏🏻Tried two different counsellors, neither were a good fit. (or is it “neither was”? hahha)

😩Reached out to no one nor shared with anyone the depth of the pit I felt that I had dug for myself.

👀The heaviest weight I have ever been in my life, even more than my three pregnancies or after my mom died. (This sure doesn’t feel good!)

And why I am writing about this now and what changed for me?

Did I lose weight? Finally found a professional counsellor I could trust?  Started seeing other human beings, outside my work, on a regular basis? None of these things happened for me!

Four things did changed for me and they all involved random conversations with other people when I stepped outside my four walls. The message I am going to share with my stories is simple: If you relate to any of the six points I wrote down above, don’t wait 700 days to reach outside of your four walls. Right now, listen to a podcast, text someone, go for a walk, ask your neighbour for an egg or simply reach out to another human being in any way that feels good for you.

The four things that finally helped me make some really HUGE personal shifts took place over a six month period of time.

First, I have always been someone who listens to podcasts when they do laundry or when I drive or go for a long solo walks. In October, I was introduced to a podcast that began THE shift. Mel Robbins, your twice weekly podcasts have been something that have given me so many tips, moved me to take some small steps and gave me the shovel that started my dig out of my mental and physical hole. Your life journey is powerful and I am grateful that you share with us all. I gave your ideas a try.

Second, in October, I was at my lowest point of this two plus year journey. I was in Vancouver and a friend knew I was in town. We went for a walk and she shared about an App that helped her with her eating habits and overall health. I gave it a try.

Third, in April, Steve and I were out for our evening walk and we ran into some neighbours.  They shared that they were doing a “Couch to 5km” walk/run program that was simple and tailored to what you want to do. (This was humbling to consider as four years ago, I would run 20 kilometres for fun on a weekend!) I humbled myself and gave it a try.

Lastly, at the end of April, I was at a teacher’s conference and three of my colleagues were sitting around a table. Suddenly, one of them shrieked about a job that was available at our school and said, “You would be amazing at that!”.  They immediately called over my boss and she wholeheartedly agreed.  I decided to apply.

In all of these instances, I was showing up in the world as my unhealthiest, unhappiest, down in the lowest point in the second most challenging spot in my life.  (My mom’s death was and is still number one!)

But, I just showed up and walked.

I showed up and walked some more.

And I simply did my job to the best of my ability!

Now, things are shifting in radical and profound ways (more on that in a later post!).

Be you.

Exactly where you are.

Show up, how and when you can.

Reach outside those four walls around yours.

And watch things unfold.

Let my life be a testimony that there is always hope.

The best is truly YET to come for me, Sexy Neck and our boys.

And the best is YET to come for you too!

Strap yourself in folks for what is to come and love what you do!

Be Having No Time

I don’t have time to talk about you because if you are an important person in my life I am talking TO you.

I don’t have time to worry about if you have lost or gained weight, I am 100% focused on my own health.

I don’t have time to ponder what you are doing with your life, but I am praying that you would have a life filled with love, joy and peace.

I don’t have time to wonder why you left my life and want nothing to do with me as I am completely enveloped with love by the people who choose to spend time with me.

I don’t have any time to think about who you love or want to marry, I am focused on making my own relationships better.

I don’t have time to wonder why my family of origin has fallen far apart since my mom died. The rich relationships that have filled this Grand Canyon gap from my mom’s death and the ‘chosen family’ who shower us with encouragement are greater than any gift I could imagine.

I don’t have time to judge what you do with your money, your time or your relationships because God is showing me all the good He is doing through knowing you.

I don’t have time. I don’t believe in busy. I don’t believe in missing anyone.

I create time.

Busy is a swear word.

If I miss you, I reach out to you. The only people I miss are dead. They definitely don’t have any time.

Make time for what’s important to you folks.

Have an epic Monday and love what you do.

xoxo Joanna

Be Celebrating

Cancer teaches you how to celebrate.

Each drink of water.

Every step from the bed to the couch.

Celebrating a rub on my hand.

A nuzzle.

A twinkle in her eye.

A smile and a kiss from her lips.

Yes, cancer is the great teacher of celebration!

I have learned the lesson well.

IMG_3759[1]

Now I celebrate each conversation.

Send a card to celebrate a landmark in people’s lives.

Every night when my boys lie down to bed, I celebrate their days with them, nuzzle their necks, show them my twinkle for them and leave them with a smile and a kiss.

This last Saturday, we celebrated.

As a couple, as a family and as a business team!

Reaching a “Crystal” position.

We have put ourselves out there to share solutions we love.

Solutions around energy, performance, weight loss, healthy aging and wealth creation.

Solutions we believe can change lives.

Starting with us!

My boys told me that I am skinnier, kinder and that I have less vibration in my tummy!

My Sexy Neck told me that he can see my determination to reach my goals of helping people and that this is happening!

My CC told me that my pouchee tummy is gone!

I celebrate that I have something to give to the world!

I am no longer striving, I am just being.

Being me.

Doing what I love every day.

Connecting.

Coaching.

Conversing.

Being authentic.

Allowing people to be.

Celebrating!

Life!

Being!

Me!

Being who I have always dreamed that I could be!

Be Shocked at my Swimsuit

Day by day.

I never realized how my daily decisions could create so many changes and breakthrough moments in my life.

One year ago…

…I was never going back to teaching… But I found my dream job.

…I was never going to ‘survive’ my mom’s death… But I did and my life has never been richer.

…I was determined not to ‘give up’ on relationships… But I let them go and am finding freedom to live.

… I was thirty pounds heavier, working out hard and wasn’t losing weight… But I am partnering with the company of my dream and have never been healthier.

Dude! Daily choices do create huge changes.

The proof is in the swimsuit.

Shocked.

Exhilarated.

Excited.

Savouring this moment.

Look at ALL that extra fabric.

Be enough, one mouthful, one relationship, one swimsuit at a time.

Be Starving Yourself

I was out walking the hills today with a protein shake in my hand in an area called the Cariboo, not the animal caribou, the region Cariboo.

I was looking at the dark green plants and the lush trees and then I got looking at the soil.  The soil looked rich, it looked vibrant. It was alive!

And then I realized that I have been starving myself, unknowingly for many years.

I didn’t feel rich.

I wasn’t vibrant.

Nor would I describe my energy level as alive.

Yes, I ate three square meals per day like my parents told me.

I ate fruit, vegetables, protein, grains, milk products and probably too many healthy fats.  (I love my nuts!)

I even would only eat three quarters of the bag of Costco chips and sometimes I would only sneak down and eat half of the leftover birthday cake.

I was never satisfied with what I was eating.

 I never felt full.

I never felt like I had enough.

I think I was literally starving myself.

Craving salt or other minerals.

Looking for protein in all sorts of sources.

Seeking vitamins but forgetting to take my vitamins.

 DRUM ROLL PLEASE…

Enter into my life a protein shake product that has whey from New Zealand cows that are grass fed and get milked when they want to be.

STOP THE PRESS those OTHER protein shakes or milk products I was consuming may have been made with cows that are injected with antibiotics because of the feed lots that they live in and get stuffed with growth hormone because they don’t produce milk when they are scheduled.

DUDE… Antibiotics, growth hormone, my body was hurting for certain.

 BUT, back to the shakes.

I LOVE THESE SHAKES!

Can you feel the excitement?

 I feel full.

I love the taste.

I feel satisfied.

I have energy.

 I can do ANYTHING!

I did my first triathlon just over a week ago after consuming a shake.  I played competitive volleyball for TEN YEARS and never felt as good as I did during these two hours swimming, biking and running twenty years AFTER my retirement from volleyball.

I am no longer starving my body, my mind or even my spirit.

Full of gratitude for ALL that I can do.

Overflowing with blessings because of this product that has enriched my life in so many ways.

 Come watch the journey unfold.

Be Wondering About Your Why

This week I launched myself into the deep end by sharing a new business venture with some very close friends.

My mentor and teammate, TC, encouraged me to really question what my ‘why’ is. Why am I starting a business now?

Why?

Why?

Why?

My husband, Sexy Neck, loves his amazing job working in schools, but is very busy.

Being his supporting partner and wife is a gift.  I love it!

My three wee, active boys are eight, five and three.

Being their mom is a blessing,  my most fulfilling role and ‘job’.   I love my boys!

I have just returned to teaching after a five year hiatus, working with incredible families who school at home.

Being a teacher is sharing my passion for learning, finding fun resources and being able to help students grow in depth of knowledge and spirit.  I love my profession.

About ten months ago, I started distributing my friend’s product called GreenTeaHawaii.

Being able to connect with people and sell a product you love is pure joy for me.   I love selling tea.

And now I am launched.

At ground zero of a new business.

I am sharing my story and building a team of like-minded people focused on health that want to create residual income for their families.

BUT why am I really doing this right now?

It is because of the life my mom lived and the lessons her life and death taught me.  Ah man, I love my Mama.

I feel that it isn’t a coincidence all these opportunities are coming my way.

Her death has set me free.

It has allowed me to ponder life, live my days and find my why’s.

My ‘Why’ for this new business venture I discovered in my mom’s obituary that we wrote in December of 2013.

“Gwen, in her home, profession and community never stopped teaching and learning.  Her servant heart complimented her active adventurous spirit.  In her finest role, Super Nana created magical memories.  Her exemplary life inspires us to love deeply, serve others and live fully.”

Loving deeply.

Serving others.

Creating magical memories for my boys, family and friends.

Launching myself fully into a business that promotes health, builds people up and provides income to those who want to take the opportunity.

Living my why.

Loving my peeps.

Loving these products.

Loving this business.

Loving how I feel.

Being enough.

Be Having Fat

I had to share this quote that I came across a few months ago. It has greatly encouraged me as I have set some health goals to ‘be able to keep up to my boys.” This has meant that I want to shed a few pounds. Have you felt ten pounds of butter?

Ten more pounds to be light (and unfortunately I can’t get this in a bottle like my hair colour!) and running alongside my boys.

May this quote encourage you on your journey.

One unconscious belief.

Shattered.

One conscious thought.

Replaced.

One mouthful.

At a time.

One workout.

Every day.

Let’s go TEAM LIGHT!

Be Sharing Green Tea Hawaii Love

My story with Green Tea Hawaii started even before I knew that Green Tea Hawaii existed. green tea logo In the summer of 2013, my mom was in profound pain. She had a distended stomach. We thought it was a bladder infection. It was cancer. She journeyed through six months with cancer, living in tremendous pain. We shared many moments shaving her head, watching the boys, cutting her toenails, living each moment. Very unexpectantly the cancer continued to multiply and mom became an angel in heaven on Boxing Day 2013.

Back in mid-October, Mom went to see a Physician at an Integrative Cancer Clinic that supports each patient’s emotional, physical and spiritual health. At this appointment, they doctor covered many topics from eating, exercise, supplements, meditation and encouraged mom on her overall cancer journey. One moment that made her laugh, was when he suggested that she drink ten cups of green tea per day. It has shown that drinking green tea slows down and even stops cancer cell’s from multiplying. My mom was barely eating nor drinking at this point, so the thought of drinking ten cups of green tea made us giggle. If I only knew…

Fast forward now to March, where our family had been given a great gift from a University friend and teammate, their house for ten days in Hawaii. We were also given free access to this amazing product that they own called Green Tea Hawaii. They had samples all over their kitchen counter and we helped ourselves.  Green Tea Hawaii changed our lives.

Everyone I know that has tried Green Tea Hawaii talks about the benefit of the extra energy. I now ride my bike at 6:00am, just because I want to and can. (And I ain’t no morning person!) I enjoy doing Jillian Michaels DVD’s in the afternoon and evenings because I have the energy to. Plus I still have lots left in me to be a present and loving mom to my three boys under seven. Before Green Tea Hawaii, I was struggling.

I love the L-theanine in the Green Tea Hawaii as it gives me a great sense of peace. The combination of the Noni and green tea is absolutely delicious. This is a sweet tea, but contains less than one gram of stevia and sugar. (One teaspoon of sugar is about four to five grams for those visual people.)

Hot or cold.

Shaken not stirred.

Mixed with about a cup of pure water

I have finally found my drink!

The health benefits of the Green Tea Hawaii take me back to the appointment with my mom. Each sleeve of the Green Tea Hawaii equal around 45 cups of Green Tea. Yup, you read that correctly. My mom could have drank just one sleeve and had more than the benefits of the 10 cups of tea that were recommended. satchet

The other benefit of Green Tea Hawaii is weight loss. This is an added bonus for me as I already love the health benefits of this product. If you take one sleeve fifteen minutes before breakfast and again before lunch, it revs up your metabolism. I am not entirely sure how this works, but as of today, I have lost fifteen pounds. But nothing compares to the taste, cancer fighting and energy that Green Tea Hawaii brings me.

My dad now uses Green Tea Hawaii to help with his arthritis from his hockey playing days. My husband doesn’t drink pop or energy drinks anymore and he has more energy than before. In one weekend, he planted twenty-two cedars and fifteen HUNDRED square feet of new grass. He had a Green Tea Hawaii in the afternoon and early evening which gave him what he needed to work hard. IMG_4165IMG_4172 Lastly, I have to tell you that after I discovered Green Tea Hawaii, I went to my Naturopathic Physician. Anything that I eat or drink on a daily basis, I like to check out with her. She looked at the ingredients and loved the product for me. She only cautioned the caffeine in Green Tea can disrupt your sleep cycle, so don’t have it after five o’clock in the evening. One sleeve of Green Tea Hawaii is the same amount of caffeine in one cup of Java. She loved the calming affect of the L-theanine as well as the health benefits of the high quality Green Tea from Japan and the Noni from the Polynesian Island. I am very excited and full of gratitude that I can share this product with anyone that would like to try it. Can you tell? IMG_4654IMG_4664
