Be Pigpen, Not Lucy

I used to know it all!

Image

I could stand on my box and spout off all sorts of interesting facts and you bet that I would always spell it write right.  Oh I had opinions, my friends, and they were usually right or wrong.

I used my six foot frame to play any and every sport.  I never rested, nor sat down very long.

My prayer life was as rich as putting a sliver of milk chocolate in a cup of hot water.

Almost four years ago, after the birth of our second child, my world fell apart.

I started having numbness and tingling, muscular fatigue, memory loss and other “annoying” physical ailments.   I felt despair that was like a river of mud.  I thought thoughts that were as dark as this muddy river.  I held onto my old self, but ended up having to let it go.

God was creating a new ME.

He used the people in my life to wade into the muddy water. My Tuesday night bible study leader, a faraway friend in Alberta,  a mommy friend from the beginning, a friend from University life, a teacher I taught beside and a husband who stood by me through it all!

I wouldn’t have survived the mud without the prayer of these Saints, the encouragement to keep putting one foot in front of each other and the opportunity to see miracles working through them.  God weaves everything together for His good, even my tingling, my problems and my “pain in the ass” attitude.

About three months ago, someone called me “Pigpen”.  I was tremendously hurt by this.  I stewed over this comment for days.  Then I felt extremely grateful and such depth of insight that it could have only been from God.

Thank you Jesus as I would rather live the rest of my life as Pigpen than as Lucy.

PS.  Sexy Neck just told me that I would probably be more like Linus.  I like to be warm and cozy in my blankie.  HAHA!

Be Not Smelling of Smoke

I am constantly amazed at how my life lessons weave together without my intention or purpose.    Often it feels like everything is weaved together like a beautiful quilt, overlapping lessons made with the same fabric and bright new ones every day.

We have bought a house that had smokers living in it for over 40 years.  I walked in the door, got an immediate headache and had to walk out.   My husband smelt beyond the smoke and saw the great structure, new roof, windows, furnace and he knew that he could work to get rid of the smoke.  Me, I was not so optimistic.   I have not been overwhelming optimistic about this whole renovation project.

I grew up with a mother that smoked for a long time.   My sister and I finally harassed her enough that she stopped.  If I would go to a place where there was smoking, upon returning home I would immediately take off my clothes, put them outside and hit the shower.  The clothes never came back into the house until they were to go into the washing machine.   The smell of smoke repulses me.

I have a beautiful desk that I was given to me by my grandmother.  I remember my grandmother writing letters and in her journal at this desk.  BUT this desk lived in a smoking home for over 30 years, thus the desk has not make it inside our house.

Here it sadly sits in my parent’s garage:

One of my greatest life lessons has come this week, through the book of Daniel in the Old Testament and it is all about the smell of smoke.

A good friend and I are studying it with the help of Beth Moore.  This week we hit chapter three.  In this chapter, it talks about King Nebuchadnezzar building an image of gold ninety feet high and nine feet wide.  When everyone heard a sound, they were told to fall down and worship the image or they would immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace. Three Jewish men refused to bow down. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were given another chance, but they refused to bow down.  Here’s what King Neb did next:

– ordered the furnace be heated seven times hotter than usual

– commanded some of the strongest men in the army to tie the three Jewish men up and throw them into the blazing furnace

Here’s what God did:

– the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took them up, but not Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego

– there were FOUR men walking in the fire (no longer tied up!)  Perhaps it was Jesus?

– lastly, the fire did not harm their bodies nor was a hair on their head singed; their robes were not scorched and there was NO SMELL OF FIRE ON THEM!

Whew, so I am going to exhibit a little faith, these men were thrown into a fire and didn’t even come out smelling like it, our house with a bit of elbow grease isn’t going to smell like smoke.  Thank you Jesus!

Now, I am feeling brave enough to use a little elbow grease of my own and get my grandmother’s desk ready to go into our new home.

Isn’t she a beauty?

P.S. If you want to know more about the story of King Neb and the gold statue, check out Daniel 3 in the Old Testament.  I had never read it before last week.  Pretty amazing!

Be Quiet Together

I am the kind of girl that is a tad bit loud to go along with my six foot frame.   Quiet time is not my strength, but it is becoming my strength.

As I journey through this year of blogging, and now moving, I am realizing that it is the quiet moments that I have with friends that are the most memorable and moving.

As a goodbye to a wonderful home, amazing neighbours and friends, I decided to host a yoga class in my empty house.   A wonderful “warrior” woman shared her gift of teaching, gift of yoga and gift of space and peace with us.

Here was my intention for the evening:

My hope is that this evening is a restful time for you and a celebration of all our new beginnings – large and small, chosen and not chosen, beautiful new beginnings.

I pray with all my heart that you will always know love and grace, the love that allows your kids to run into your car on their bike and allows you the freedom to run over theirs.  Grace and love the surpasses all understanding.

I pray that you know peace, peace of yoga, peace of skiing, paddling, time spent in Gods country, peace of being with people you love.

I pray that you always know pure joy.  Joy of eating together, reading together, Circle Park soccering together, wine drinking and laughing together.

I pray that you know your neighbours – incredibly caring, giving, loving, gracious neighbours.

I pray you know that there is a purpose and a plan to everything.  A beautiful patchwork quilt that has woven us all together and brought us together in this moment.

Lastly, I pray you know friendship. Friends who go along with crazy ideas for clubs, events, get togethers.  Friends who bake you gluten free treats and teach you how to bake.  Friends who share a piece of themselves, their struggles and their joys.  A friend who really wants all of you to do ZUMBA buy opts for a safe yoga class in her empty house.  Friends who walk with you during the early years of motherhood – whew!  Friends like you!

I pray all these things as I trust in God with all my heart, leaning not on my own understanding.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Cheers to ALL my Warrior women… to all of us in different seasons of life, but living it TOGETHER!  Peace and love to you ALL!

Be Still

In the midst of decluttering, packing and keeping track of our three boys, I am trying to remember my word for this season: Rest.

For the last couple of years, I have been asking God if he could give me a word.  I have gone through prayer and peace and now it appears that I am moving into a time of rest.  I am not one to rest.  Actually, I have been described as a jet engine as well as a woman on a hamster wheel.  Ha!

I am making a conscious choice every day to get off of my hamster wheel and just “Be”.

A couple of months ago, my boys and I were playing in the driveway riding bikes and scootering.  Our wonderful Priest walked by.  I shared with him my word for right now as he asked how I was doing with all the packing.   He gave me a great meditation that I thought was absolutely amazing.  It comes from Psalm 46:10 in the Old Testament of the bible.

Here is how it works.  Read the verse, but drop one word each time you read it.  It is absolutely fascinating because each sentence is so meaningful yet so different.

Here is the meditation written out:

Be still, and know that I am God

Be still, and know that I am

Be still, and know that I

Be still, and know that

Be still, and know

Be still, and

Be still

Be

Beautiful.  May this give you a time of rest during your busy day.  Thanks Chris!

Be Enjoying The Ride

Whew, eleven weeks til our house is no longer ours.

Eleven weeks to move our “stuff” to I don’t know where.

So, we will choose to trust.  Hope.  Dream.  God has gotten us this far, He will take us the rest of the way.

What we plan on doing in the meantime is enjoying the ride.

Metaphorically and Literally.

This week, my two youngest sons and I had the car in the shop.  We went to the mall.  A place that I visit two or three times per year.  CC was in shock when he went up to the kiddie rides, asked if he could go on and I said, “YES!”.  This was a first!

I have decided it is time to enjoy the ride in more ways than one.

Be A Declutterer

I read in the Four Hour Work Week that we only use twenty percent of the things that we have.  Actually Tim Ferriss has an interesting perspective on the 80 20 rule.  Check him out:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_4-Hour_Workweek

The last three weeks, I have spent decluttering and going through our stuff so that we can put our house up for sale.

Here are the results:

ImageImageImage

These are the main “kid” areas of our house and they were overflowing with toys.  There were toys on top of shelves, stuffed into corners.  Now everything has a place to go.  We had a great morning of playing and it was amazing to see my boys putting things back into their places (without being asked)!

All this decluttering makes me thinking of the verse in Matthew 16:19 where Jesus says: “Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

I want to hold loosely to my stuff on earth because it is only “stuff”.

It is the people in my life that truly matter.  JC running into my arms after Kindergarten with a huge smile.  CC giving me his little smirk as he tells me a joke and baby OC’s squawk as he yells from the top of the bunkbed. Sexy Necks presence as he holds us all together!

Beautiful moments.

P.S. Don’t ask me to show you our parents basement where alot of this “stuff” has gone.  I am thinking we should just have a garage sale instead of moving it.  Cann boys, what do you think?

Be Into James

I had to share with you a new DVD bible study that I am doing on Jesus’ half brother, James. WOWEEE…

A few thoughts from my two week study so far:

Quote from Martin Luther that he wanted to throw “Jimmy” in the stove.

“There are no easy answers to difficult things. It’s not neat and tidy. We cannot simplify the infinite. We can’t catch the Holy Spirit with a potato sack.”

James may have been the first book of the New Testament.

Chairein, Beth Moore. (Which is the Greek work for James’ salutation in James 1:1. Chairein means “JOY to YOU!”.

Chairein Everyone.

P.S. If you have never heard Beth Moore speak before, strap yourself in!

Be on a Rock

My life currently feels like I have been living in a shaker of sand and it has all been turned upside down.

Emotionally things are tenuous as I have always been prone to exaggeration and extreme emotions, just ask Sexy Neck. The greatest thing about your Expectations being spilled out all over the earth you get to see what and who matters in life.

I am blessed with a few supportive and minimally judgmental parents and friends.

I am also blessed with good books to spur me on. The first and foremost for me is the bible, checkout Matthew 6:34 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Did you notice that word ‘enough’?

The other two books that are encouraging me right now are “Daring Greatly” and a book by John Bevere. You will have go google the title because I think it is a horrible title and doesn’t justify this great book about offense.

Here is what a read today from page 82.

“God showed my wife, Lisa, five purposes for shaking an object:
1. To bring it closer to it’s foundation.
2. To remove what is dead.
3. To harvest what is ripe.
4. To awaken.
5. To unify or mix together so it can no longer be separated.”

I found these 5 purposes oddly encouraging as I thought about my life and watched my sons playing on the rocks.

(Picture to come!)

Lord, my life feels like I am crawling along the rocks, but I know that You are my rock.
