Be a Saturday Night Hair Styler

I have never really “done my hair”. Yes, I have had it cut, coloured and styled at the hair dresser, but besides perhaps adding some sort of hair product and blow drying my hair and perhaps even combing it, that’s all folks!

A couple of weeks ago, I got my hair cut from a wonderfully beautiful and young hairdresser. She spent 3 hours on my hair. Yes, 3 hours! 3 whole hours to myself reading magazines, chatting and I even got a nice hot cloth to wipe my hands and some beautiful cream to put on afterwards. Anyways… so in those three hours, she cut, shampooed, dried, straightened and styled my hair.

Last Saturday night I was inspired, I decided to relive the teenage years that I had heard about, doing your hair on a Saturday night. I had spent my teenage years playing sports or watching a video with a big group of friends. Hair styling never.

This was a first for me. Enjoy the fun!

Hmmmm….

Hey, what is going on?

Oh my, what did I do? Back to the regular Saturday night programming!

My oldest did walk in at one point and say, “Mommy you look beautiful!”. Thanks darling.

Be a Rememberer

I honour Remembrance Day.

Did you know that there is a little piece of Canada in France?   Vimy Ridge is a Canadian Memorial above the Douai Plains. I have ran the trails through the battlefield park, as we lived about 10 kilometers from the park for about 8 months.  From a runner’s perspective, the ridge is huge.  I can now imagine why it took years to capture the ridge.

I didn’t not go into the preserved trenches.  I was too afraid.   As a six foot tall woman, I was afraid to get stuck down there!  I ain’t no small fry!

Thank you for everyone who has served and serves our country abroad and at home, including policemen, firefighters, ambulance drivers etc.

Here is a permanent mural for Remembrance Day in our little town:

Be a Leaf Gatherer

You know that I love trees, but for the past two weeks, I have been secretly cursing our HUGE maple, walnut, cherry and two apricot trees because my husband is lying on the couch with a surgery attached Achilles tendon.

Guess who is raking all the leaves this year? Moi, me, meine! But not only is raking the leaves on my mind this year, I am also taking care of 3 children 5 and under as well as being the hands and driver for my crutch using, boot wearing husband!

I was overwhelmed with my leaves, until two magnificent women came into my life… today my 69 year old mom and our neighbour came over to rake up all the beautiful leaves… and yes they were beautiful again once they were all lined up and waiting for the next snowfall.

Whew!

Thanks fellow leaf gatherers. “Air hugs!” (As my oldest son calls them!)

Be a Tree Hugger

Every single place I have lived and loved has had fabulous trees! There is something about old gnarled trees with leaves floating along their branches. The beauty of how trees shelter us in the summer and then lose their leaves so that we can get more sun in the winter.

As humans, we try to make things “straight”. Our homes have 90 degree walls, our mattresses, coffee tables, shelves and chair have them too! We like things smooth and straight.

I often do this with my situations and relationships, I like them to go in a particular way, I don’t enjoy any rough edges. Sometimes, I feel very uncomfortable.

But, God created the things of this earth crooked, bend, gnarled and beautiful. I need to strive to be more like our trees in our backyard – knowing I am God’s creation, perhaps “imperfect” in the world’s eyes, but beautiful! I need to trust Him more.

Be a Gamer!

This post is for my Gamers: Danielle on 29th Cres., Angela in Edmonton and Rea in Spain!

Do you want to be a Gamer?

In the past two years, I have played this game 4 times now! (Three times with groups of women and once on my own.)

I have learned about my food addictions, my habits (healthy and unhealthy), my love of exercise and my need for water and sleep.

Mostly, I have learned that I need a community of women, like an old-fashioned quilting bee, to have around to inspire and encourage me. Rea, Angela and Danielle have been these women for me. We have played the game twice together (almost!).

We have learned about each others flossing habits, run ins with rice pudding, setting goals, feeling less fluffy, how to post on facebook so that everyone doesn’t now you are smooching your husband, BB’q sardines, playing for money, what to do with leftover food, and RIP 60.

I have learned moderation with food and unhealthy habits and how to replace these things with healthy habits, exercise, sleep and water! I could talk about this game all day long! I love it!

Need a little inspiration in your life? Check out the book. GAME ON!

Be a Morning Person?

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am not a morning person. My pattern has been work late, exercise in the evening, sleep in when I can… and when I say sleep in, I mean til 10am or later.

The birth of 3 children aged 5, 3 and 1, have slowly lead me to become a morning person. I now regularly wake up between 5am and 6am, depending on which boss boy needs me.

Don’t tell any of my immediate family members, hence we might bring on a heart attack, but I actually enjoy my mornings now.

The boys and I eat breakfast, look out the window at the birds/snow/leaves, play some lego and we hangout together at our extra large borrowed Ikea table.

I even get a little bible study in, where I can read, reflect, pray and be thankful. What a way to start a day!

Be a Man with a “Crutch”

My hubby, Sexy Neck, tore his Achilles one week ago. He had surgery and is now recovering at home. He is a man with crutches. He cannot carry his coffee cup or his cereal bowl. He can’t put his foot on the ground. He can’t go pee without grabbing his crutches. He can’t shower nor do stairs easily.

Do you know what he has decided to do? Laugh. Yes, laugh! He is probably one of the wittiest people I know.

He laughs that he is officially “old” with his old man/weekend warrior injury.

He laughs because all he does all day is heal his connective tissue and grow facial hair (for Movember)!

He laughs because he moves from the couch to the bed and vice versa. When you ask what he did during the day, he will come up with some funny joke.

I laugh because he has decided to shave his head just because he wants something to do!

I think we should all be a person with a crutch who has time to hear their children’s many stories and give “fake” gold medals and flowers to their wives when they do the laundry or load the dishwasher.

I love you Sexy Neck in good times and in bad!

Be a Rocker!

I have had red short hair in Switzerland, blond long hair in Germany and now long, black hair in Canada.

I am calling this my rocker hair.

It reminds me of an amazing mother, woman, guitar player/singer named Rachelle van Zanten and her amazing locks of hair as she dances, sings, strums and works to save our environment!

Thanks for the inspiration Rachelle! http://www.rachellevanzanten.com/

Plus it covers up all the grey! Nice! Rock on…
