Be a Bread Maker

I am not a baker nor a chef, really I am not much of a cook, but I can follow a recipe. I think that everyone, including myself, should learn how to bake bread.

There is nothing like kneading some dough, rolling it out, watching it miraculous rise then smell it cooking in the oven. This experience becomes wondrous with two little boys at my side!

We recently attempted a couple of loaves of whole spelt bread. My boys loved “kneading” (AKA crushing, pulling, smushing…) the bread. JC made a house and our middle one, CC, made a blob.

We ate a few pieces then observed their transformation into hockey pucks which made it into the garbage the next day.

My cousin’s husband at http://notsospanish.wordpress.com/ bakes bread for the family EVERY week, so I guess I will leave this task up to Sexy Neck.

We actually sent these delicious photos as Sexy Neck was sitting at the hospital waiting for surgery on his Achilles. Sorry honey, we forgot that you had to fast the whole day!

Be a Papa

My dad is the best!

He really tries to help and empathizes completely with me trying to do errands with three young boys. He will stop over and say, “Do you have anything you need to get done? Why don’t you pop out for awhile and I will hangout with the boys?” I don’t even hesitate I grab my wallet and I am off to do 18 things in the next 60 minutes!

Yesterday I came home from an afternoon of marathon errand running and I found the house completely silent with 3 boys napping and perhaps even one Papa napping!

He will always just say, “I was just resting my eyes!”.

Love you Papa and Nana.

P.S. This week he even changed a few dirty diapers and cleaned up some vomit. More on that tomorrow!

Be Sick

I do not like being sick! When I was a paid professional, I rarely took a sick day when I had the sniffles, a cough or even a fever. I felt that I had to troop on through for the sake of my job! Even now as a full time mom, I rarely take a day to rest when I am sick.

We are now onto day 3 of our biggest boy being sick with a raging fever and a few other symptoms (I won’t give you the gory details!) . According to the nurse at 811, children can go up to one week with a fever without any “affects”! Poor guy.

They said that kindergarten would bring on the sickness, but I didn’t think it would be this bad. JC has not been off our couch or out of the bed since Friday! For our normal tree climbing, monkey bar climbing, bed flipping little boy this is a strange occurrence!

What do I take from this? Well, if you are sick or your child is sick, do everyone in a school or at work at favour, take a sick day or two! Allow your body to heal and give yourself some space to be well. If we don’t have our health we don’t have anything.

Be rocky!

We had an up and down and all around kind of weekend in one of our favourite places in the world.

We missed a ferry and were overwhelmed by tourists in our favourite spot. We had a delicious thanksgiving dinner with all the fixing cooked by my mom. Dad did almost all the dishes all weekend. Our labrador retriever had the time of her life in the lake and on the trails on the hillside.

We had our first road trip where mommy yelled very loud then had to take a timeout at the side of the road. I had my eldest son give me a “Joshua stone”. We had a long period of crying by our one year old. We also had 2 very peaceful sleepers… so I guess it all evens out.

When we go to the hot springs, we always head down to the rocky shore by the lake. The lake is man made with huge boulders of all shapes and sizes lining the shore.

This trip our big boys spent quite a bit of time trying to stack up the rocks. It was amazing to see their determination and focus and ability to get the rocks to balance. I hope they always have this focus and inner balance.

I tried for a few minutes to get my rocks to balance and I couldn’t even get the rocks stacked four high… well I did have a baby in my arms!!

Be a planner

Other than the daily grind of dishes, laundry, diaper changing, well you get what I mean, I like having things to look forward to.

When I knew that my husband was changing jobs to the town down the road, beside the lake and across “the bridge”, I knew that we were going to have to do some planning.

The first things I did was hire a cleaner, yup a cleaner! Now I don’t have to do the weekly scrub the toilet, the floors etc., but I am free to just tidy and clean up spills and I am “free” to enjoy it.

The second thing I did was to make sure that every weekend we had one day just as a family. The boys sometimes stay in their PJ’s. Sexy neck doesn’t have to get in his car.

The last thing we did was to plan special events together. Tomorrow we are going to one of my favourite places in the world – the hot springs. Relaxing, rejuvenating, quiet… just us! Enjoy our weekend everyone!

Be Adventureous

My boys are the most creative and sometimes daring people I know. They can turn a piece of bread into a car at one years old (JC), a small push car into a flying projectile (CC) and a puppy dog into a pillow (OC).

Today the creativity went to new heights. The boys turned a goalie pads into a jet pack and wings. Here is the clincher, they had to do it while naked! Why men why? Please explain this to me.

I tried to take a photo without the private parts! I hope I don’t offend anyone… at least they didn’t ask to use the old crib mattress for a sled on the stairs today!
