Be A Spray Painter

I love our contractor.  He has saved us hundreds of hours renovating our new house.  I especially love his spray painter machine thingy.  Yup, I am really getting into this renovation thing aren’t I!  hee hee…

Here are the latest photos from the living room and kitchen – We have had the house for four weeks…

… and we have probably four weeks to go!

Be Not Smelling of Smoke

I am constantly amazed at how my life lessons weave together without my intention or purpose.    Often it feels like everything is weaved together like a beautiful quilt, overlapping lessons made with the same fabric and bright new ones every day.

We have bought a house that had smokers living in it for over 40 years.  I walked in the door, got an immediate headache and had to walk out.   My husband smelt beyond the smoke and saw the great structure, new roof, windows, furnace and he knew that he could work to get rid of the smoke.  Me, I was not so optimistic.   I have not been overwhelming optimistic about this whole renovation project.

I grew up with a mother that smoked for a long time.   My sister and I finally harassed her enough that she stopped.  If I would go to a place where there was smoking, upon returning home I would immediately take off my clothes, put them outside and hit the shower.  The clothes never came back into the house until they were to go into the washing machine.   The smell of smoke repulses me.

I have a beautiful desk that I was given to me by my grandmother.  I remember my grandmother writing letters and in her journal at this desk.  BUT this desk lived in a smoking home for over 30 years, thus the desk has not make it inside our house.

Here it sadly sits in my parent’s garage:

One of my greatest life lessons has come this week, through the book of Daniel in the Old Testament and it is all about the smell of smoke.

A good friend and I are studying it with the help of Beth Moore.  This week we hit chapter three.  In this chapter, it talks about King Nebuchadnezzar building an image of gold ninety feet high and nine feet wide.  When everyone heard a sound, they were told to fall down and worship the image or they would immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace. Three Jewish men refused to bow down. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were given another chance, but they refused to bow down.  Here’s what King Neb did next:

– ordered the furnace be heated seven times hotter than usual

– commanded some of the strongest men in the army to tie the three Jewish men up and throw them into the blazing furnace

Here’s what God did:

– the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took them up, but not Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego

– there were FOUR men walking in the fire (no longer tied up!)  Perhaps it was Jesus?

– lastly, the fire did not harm their bodies nor was a hair on their head singed; their robes were not scorched and there was NO SMELL OF FIRE ON THEM!

Whew, so I am going to exhibit a little faith, these men were thrown into a fire and didn’t even come out smelling like it, our house with a bit of elbow grease isn’t going to smell like smoke.  Thank you Jesus!

Now, I am feeling brave enough to use a little elbow grease of my own and get my grandmother’s desk ready to go into our new home.

Isn’t she a beauty?

P.S. If you want to know more about the story of King Neb and the gold statue, check out Daniel 3 in the Old Testament.  I had never read it before last week.  Pretty amazing!

Be Removing A Closet

What do we really WANT and NEED?

This question keeps rolling through my mind as I wade through the copious amount of stuff in my parents basement and the torn apart house we hope to occupy in less than four weeks.

You will be happy to know that we are not going on the Hoarders TV show, but we are making steps to remove a closet so that all three of our boys can share a room.

Yes, in the world of resale, probably not the best move.  But in the realm of us having the priority that our boys will be close, share their lives and their worlds with each other, getting rid of a closet is something we need to do.

One decision down… 1,368 to go!

The view of the closet from the hall.  Look at all that space we will have for the boys literal bed room.  We plan on keeping their clothes, books and some toys in the other bedroom down the hall.  The boys are excited about their “sleeping” room and their “book” room as they are calling them.

Be A Man – Part IV

I love my man!  Usually when I talk about ‘be a man’ (see here), I am talking about Sexy Neck.

In the midst of cleaning, moving and digging out trees, I had to add a guest “man” to my banter with my man.

Papa Bob or Baron Bob as we lovingly call our dear friend, is a great man.

He came to dig out our boy’s placenta trees.  Trees we had planted with our boys placenta’s underneath.  Strange, I know, but really interesting.   JC has an autumn blaze tree because of the colour and CC has a plane tree because of the size.  OC will get his tree this fall when he turns two.

Since we were moving today, the boys requested that the trees come with us.  They also asked if we could bring the bathroom mirror, but we left that behind.

Our Papa Bob, was busy digging a humungous hole in our heavy clay soil, but when the boys arrived he had them digging with him, avoided hitting them with his sledgehammer and looked like a superhero when the roots finally gave way.

Here is Papa Bob in action.  Let’s remember it is easy to get our heads down in a hole, but it is the people that God has placed around us that really matter.  Thank PB for reminding us of this!

Be A Reuser

After an autumn of yard cleaning

(remember this post: https://beenough.wordpress.com/2012/11/11/be-a-leaf-gatherer/)

and a winter of decluttering, our trailer is full!  It is ready to go to the garbage dump.

Our eldest was looking in our trailer, that cost us two bottles of wine, the other day, eyeing up our Christmas tree, the old laundry sink and a few other treasures.

Suddenly, he reached in and pulled out an old tire.  He asked his dad for some rope and he was off.  With a bit of cajoling from dad, they worked together to create this:

JC, you are incredibly thoughtful and full of ideas.  Your brothers and friends have had an incredible time on our new tire swing!  CC, thanks for helping your brother and for enjoying the ride.

Be A Cushion Creator

Normally our couches look like this:

These are the cushions in “holiday mode”.

If the boys use our cushions to create chaos (hitting, pushing, yelling etc.), the cushions  go on “holiday”.

Most days our cushions are used to make rocket ships, pirate ships, boats, airplanes, forts and caves.

This morning our kindergartener was home sick from school. Our boys had an incredible two hour cushion-fest.  It was incredible to see all the creations that they made, including this cave the boys wanted to eat their snack in.

Here is JC’s coming out of the cave!

Our house is made for play.  We don’t have a playroom, we have a playhouse.

Our bedroom is the wrestling area, our kitchen table is  the crafts/playdough/lego spot, our kitchen is the science experiment/baking place and window sills are meant for climbing.
