Be Cutting Down a BIG tree!

We were in boy heaven this morning!

This tree had to be cut down :(.
We had a tree company show up with cranes, huge saws and a humongous tree cruncher.

The excitement started off with one of their workers putting on his harness getting attached to the crane and getting pulled to the very top of our tree

He then attached himself to our tree and attach the crane above him. Next he went to work.

They cut about 20 feet off the top of the tree and then pulled it up with the crane and took it down to the street so they could cut off all the branches. The trunk of the tree was still attached to the crane and it went flying through the air like Mary Poppins and was put on a trailer farther down the street. They did this FOUR different times.

Lastly, they cleaned up the street and left us a little bit of memorabilia leaning against one of the other trees.

Now you’re probably wondering why did we spend thousands to cut down the tree.

Back in September, we had a fairly large windstorm and we were watching the tree. We noticed that it was swaying quite a bit.

After we inspected the tree further and had four different arborists come to look at the tree, we realized that the tree had been cabled in two different places to try to keep the branches together. (This is the trunk that came flying past my kitchen window!)

Just note to self: if you ever buy a house take a close look at the trees because they can be expensive to remove!

Let.

There.

Be.

Light.

Our new view.

Be Carving Pumpkins

We had our third annual pumpkin carving on the weekend and I couldn’t resist sharing the photos. Our old friends and neighbours from the old hood drove down to carve with us

It was a time full of laughter and creativity. It was amazing to see our boys working with other adults. We provide the appetizers and the space, everyone else brings their pumpkins and tools. The oldest two boys even did most of their carving this year.

This years appetizers were roasted pumpkin seeds, spicy pepperoni, feta stuffed olives, Camembert cheese, crackers, crackers and caramel corn.

Be Having Some Hideouts

My boys are incredibly creative when they are outside. They seem to go with themes, sticking with them for a month or two then they move on to something else. ( uHmmm… Might be interesting to think about as we school our boys.)

We have gone through swinging, soccer, bugs, tree climbing, treasure hunting, obstacle course making and probably a few other I am forgetting.
Here’s one of their most adventurous creations.

Right now they will look at something and immediately see “hideout”! I am letting them go with it. So far nothing has been destroyed, demolished or hurt in the process of their outside fort making.

Here are four new hideouts they have discovered in the last month:

Under the front stairs.

Under the side stairs.

They spent hours pruning the juniper so that they could all fit underneath.

This is their latest hideout and I was the ‘bad guy’!

Lets just say they were pretty easy to catch.

Be Creating a Nature Basket

My boys and I love to be outside: walking, biking, scootering, playing, creating… (Be sure to check out tomorrow’s post!)

After having pocketful of rocks and handfuls of acorns, I decided we needed to have somewhere to put these ‘treasures’.

We brought up a basket that now sits on the kitchen table. We have a proud place for our autumn treasures and I know that this picking up of treasures is only for a short ‘season’ of life.

I keep thinking about our winter treasures and how to modify the basket. Perhaps we will have to keep it in the freezer.

Be Cooking Curried Cauliflower Soup

This is one of my favourite recipes from one of my many foodie friends.

Simple.

Delicious.

Perfect autumn day food.

I have been told to rest by my doctor or the next step will be a reservation at the hospital down the road. Just a little pneumonia brewing in there. Amazing what stress will do to our bodies.

Note to self: notice my body. Thank you God for the reminder.

Rest my body.

Good food.

Time to heal.

Be Doing A Seven Minute Workout

Last night Sexy Neck and I started a twelve week challenge to try to get a tad more healthy and “move or lose it”.

I have gained thirty pounds in the last five months. Sexy Neck has been nursing a sore back and trying to recover from Achilles surgery. Here is the story. It is time. The clock is ticking.

Back in May, the New York Times picked up a story from a health journal talking about the benefits of a structured seven minute workout. You do each exercise for thirty seconds, you don’t needs any fancy equipment and after seven minutes of pain um hard work, you are done!

Sounds good? I will let you know.

Here we are last night after day one:

Summary: There was a lot of groaning, sweat and muscular fatigue. Today, I am having difficulty lifting my tea mug and walking up stairs. It was incredible to workout with my man, like the ‘olden’ days. It was worth every one of those seven minutes.

*We decided to do it twice! Who’s idea was that? We also included a warm-up, stretching and some kegels and Achilles exercises for each of our individual programs.

Here’s the boys working out with dada doing squats. CC exclaimed: “Look at my muscles I just got!”
