Be an advocate

Parenting is often very uncomfortable. You need to do things you never thought you would do, like wiping a snotty nose on the sleeve of your best shirt or wiping bums or my personal favourite cleaning up vomit!

Parenting has become very uncomfortable for me personally as my eldest son, JC, has started kindergarten. In the time I am living in right now, full day every day kindergarten is the norm. My child has never been in daycare, but he did do preschool 3 days per week. (Everyone asks me that so I had to throw that in there for some sort of validation!)

With support from a letter from his preschool teachers, we are “that family” (words directly from our principal), that is having our son go to kindergarten only until lunch time. I know that we are the only family doing that in the school, and probably the whole town.

So here is my rationale:

1. Full day (8:45 – 2:45) is too long for 5 year olds in one room with 21 other 5 year olds and one teacher. They need to be with different ages with different adults.

2. My son naps in the afternoon.

3. School isn’t everything (quote me on that!) and I think he needs to be doing other things in the community.

4. School is not daycare (don’t get me going on that!)

5. When the school day for kindergarteners went from half day to full day a few years ago, the curriculum didn’t change, so why does he need to go?

6. I don’t want to deal with the screaming and crying and behavior issues that other kindergarten parents are dealing with in the evenings! I want to enjoy family time.

Enough said!

Be a planner

Other than the daily grind of dishes, laundry, diaper changing, well you get what I mean, I like having things to look forward to.

When I knew that my husband was changing jobs to the town down the road, beside the lake and across “the bridge”, I knew that we were going to have to do some planning.

The first things I did was hire a cleaner, yup a cleaner! Now I don’t have to do the weekly scrub the toilet, the floors etc., but I am free to just tidy and clean up spills and I am “free” to enjoy it.

The second thing I did was to make sure that every weekend we had one day just as a family. The boys sometimes stay in their PJ’s. Sexy neck doesn’t have to get in his car.

The last thing we did was to plan special events together. Tomorrow we are going to one of my favourite places in the world – the hot springs. Relaxing, rejuvenating, quiet… just us! Enjoy our weekend everyone!

Be Adventureous

My boys are the most creative and sometimes daring people I know. They can turn a piece of bread into a car at one years old (JC), a small push car into a flying projectile (CC) and a puppy dog into a pillow (OC).

Today the creativity went to new heights. The boys turned a goalie pads into a jet pack and wings. Here is the clincher, they had to do it while naked! Why men why? Please explain this to me.

I tried to take a photo without the private parts! I hope I don’t offend anyone… at least they didn’t ask to use the old crib mattress for a sled on the stairs today!

Be Clear when you speak

I am meeting quite a few new women in my life through taking my son to kindergarten, my middle one going to preschool and my youngest one hanging around town with me at the coffee shop, library etc. I am always surprised at how many working mom’s now call daycare “preschool”. Let’s be clear ladies, preschool and daycare are not the same things. Let’s not judge each other’s choices, but let’s please be clear! Preschool is a part day program to help children get ready for school. Daycare is care during the day. Be confident in your decision to stay home or to go to work.

Here is All Saints Nursery School – the best preschool in town. But why is it called a nursery school? Image
